Comments and Suggestions on THE DOW DAYS

Dear Dowites all ov er the Globe

This month on December 10 2013, Dow Medical College will complete 68 years of its existence. It was established on 10th December 1945 when Sir Hugh Dow, Governor of Sindhlaid the foundation stone of the new building. The medical college was transferred from Hyderabad to Karachi on December 31 1945, The first principal of DMC was Dr. Kewalram Tarasing Ramchandani.
There have been many attempts to keep the Dow Memorabilia like graduation photos through the years, milestones, photos of faculty and principals. We found them scattered in emails, facebook etc and most importantly in alumni albums. Dr. Karatela started the Dow History project in 2005 and was able to publish a great souvenir in 2008 which was mailed to dowites. It is preserved for you in pdf format on this website. I recently joined Rizwan to complete the website called THE DOW DAYS on WordPress blog. It has now been populated with many photos and articles I had collected through the years and there are many more to add still. But this is not Rizwan and my site. It is for all Dowites to participate. Therefore we are requesting you to send in your memoirs, photos etc. and they will be published by us under your name. You can also simply browse through it and enjoy it and leave comments and suggestions. Consider this work in progress.
The most important item is the complete alumni lists from 1951 to 2006. Thi s is Rizwan’s effort. He hired a person to go over handwritten registers in the Dow Administrative Office and transfer them to excel spreadsheet. I was able to load them up by each year and now they are available for everyone to examine for accuracy and trace their friends. There are some confusing years eg. our class of 1975 graduated in 1977 and so forth. I have tried to place the classes in the year they graduated to keep things simple. If anyone year is missi ng please let us know. We are trying to figure out how to get an updated graduates’ list each year starting from 2006 to present. if anyone can help please write to one of us. Please forgive any inaccuracies in names etc. If you believe a photo belongs to you and wrong credit was given we apologize. Please let us know.

If you forg et the address, simply google ‘The Dow Days” and it will lead you to the site. It is open to public.
Later on we will pay for a named domain and server so that it will be even more easy to find. Please forward this message to your class alumni and facebook status. Don’t forget to tweet about it.

Dear Amin & Rizwan
Hats off to both of you, who have really been doing this meticulous job, for a very long time at multiple levels – class, school, college, friends, alumni, Professional association – DOAGANA, APPNA, APCNA, Religion, Country etc etc. It’s great indeed to see the selfless TIME and EFFORT spent on gathering and compiling this beautiful multilayered net-working accessible to such a global section of professionals.- Faculty, Colleagues and students (including Progeny too).

A great job Amin. Your consistent and unrelenting perseverance at preserving the memories of our alma mater is laudable indeed and shall serve as a valuable resource for past, present and future Dow graduates.

A big thank you to Amin & Rizwan for conceiving and putting together this worthwhile project which enhances the image of our Alma Mater, helps Dowites to connect with each other and can help us to introduce our medical school to colleagues who come from various other parts of the world. I believe the best ambassadors of Dow Medical College are those of us who have done so well in their academic and professional lives both at home and abroad. I feel very honoured that many of these special individuals belong to Dow77. Wish you continuing success for this and other projects in the pipeline.

Dear Dr Amin
Assallam Alaikum
I am receiving all the emails and communications but have rarely replied.
Regarding this project of Dow days, I would like to complement all of you for making special efforts.
I would further add that I the golden jubilee celebrations of  Dow [1997] had publication of photograph, history, and lists. I think has incorporated the same [ i have not been able to check so far on website] ; however if required  then the same can be provided.
I also have a publication or two of class 73 [actually 72]. Do let me know if that would help.

My word, what a marvellous job to come up with Dow Days. One can appreciate the effort gone in it. A job very well done to archive the history of our alma mater. My humble suggestions:

1. Please add a column for Dowlites and Namood e Sehr for each year since those were official annual magazines and a reflection of its years. You may also consider any souvenirs published under various sections of the unions. 2. List the students union (cabinets) for each year and if possible with photographs. DMCSU had a major role to play in DMCs day to day life as well. 3. List of the first three position holders in the finals of each year. 4. Elaborate the history of Civil Hospital. The one on its own website is inaccurate. Since that was the source of our clinical training, it can be a section on its own.

Once again Congratulations.  I am a graduate from 1983 batch.
