Dow Medical College and Civil Hospital Karachi have been integral parts of Pakistan’s medical and educational backbone for over a century. As iconic institutions, they have significantly contributed to the healthcare and education sectors by nurturing thousands of healthcare professionals who serve both nationally and internationally. Despite these crucial contributions, it remains an oversight that commemorative postage stamps were not released to honor these institutions on significant milestones.
In 1996-1997 Dow Medical College celebrated its Golden Jubilee alongside the Centenary of Civil Hospital Karachi. In 2020, it marked its 75th Anniversary, yet no commemorative stamps were issued on either of these momentous occasions. Issuing stamps on such anniversaries not only celebrates the achievements of these institutions but also acknowledges their role in shaping the country’s healthcare landscape. No official explanation for this ovesight was forthcoming from the Pakistan Post Office.
Commemorative stamps are a meaningful way to honor and preserve the legacy of institutions like Dow Medical College and Civil Hospital Karachi while spreading awareness nationally about their historical significance. Many countries regularly issue such stamps to pay tribute to their historical and educational institutions, recognizing their local and global contributions. Many schools, colleges, universities and hospitals in different parts of Pakistan have been celebrated at their establishment of milestone with a postage stamp and First Day Cover.
By issuing these stamps, Pakistan Post can engage the public, philatelists, and alumni in celebrating the history and achievements of these esteemed institutions. Moreover, it showcases Pakistan’s respect for the healthcare sector and its heroes, and inspires future generations to pursue excellence in the fields of healthcare and science.
We urge the Director General of Pakistan Post to address this oversight by considering the issuance of these commemorative stamp/stamps on the 80th Anniversary of Dow Medical College and which is being celebrated in 2025 and another stamp to recognise the services of Civil Hospital Karachi which is now called The Dr. Ruth Pfau Hospital. Such a gesture would not only remedy a missed opportunity but also reinforce the value Pakistan places on its medical institutions.
