Professor M A Almani: A Life of Purpose, A Legacy of Excellence

I had heard of Professor Almani’s greatness as a physician even during my school days in Sukkur. As a medical student, his reputation as a teacher and clinician only grew, inspiring me to seek his guidance. Our paths finally crossed in 1987 when he became Principal of Dow Medical College. Despite facing resistance from student groups, he took the helm with unwavering courage, proving himself to be a lion-hearted leader.

When I was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine in 1989, he chose me to work alongside him. I was privileged to observe his exceptional qualities: a master clinician, a gifted teacher, and a visionary leader. His kindness and compassion towards patients, especially the underprivileged, were truly remarkable.

I recall an incident in 1990 when, despite government orders allocating doctors to election duties, he stood firm, asserting that doctors are essential services and cannot be spared. He personally intervened, ensuring that I could travel to Islamabad to visit my mother.

His integrity and courage were unwavering. Once, when he was Secretary Health, a complaint was lodged against me for refusing to attend to a VIP’s family member, he tore it apart, defending my actions and upholding the principles of medical ethics. There were so many such incidents worth mentioning.

Professor Almani’s love, affection, and kindness have left an indelible mark on my heart. Our last meeting, just days before his accident, was filled with warmth and anticipation. He asked me to gather close friends, a moment I cherish. I am grateful to the Almighty for being on to his bedside during his last days.

His selfless service to the people of this province, spanning over six decades, is a testament to his character. He deserved highest Civil Award on his public service.May Allah grant him the highest place in Jannatul Firdaus. His legacy will forever inspire us snd he will always be remembered and missed.
