He served as the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.4em;\" title=\"Bengal Presidency\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bengal_Presidency\">Prime Minister of Bengal<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.4em;\">\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.4em;\" title=\"British India\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_India\">British India<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.4em;\">\u00a0and was the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.4em;\" title=\"List of Prime Ministers of Pakistan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Prime_Ministers_of_Pakistan\">fifth<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.4em;\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.4em;\" title=\"Prime Minister of Pakistan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prime_Minister_of_Pakistan\">Prime Minister of Pakistan<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.4em;\">.<\/span><sup id=\"cite_ref-banglapedia.org_1-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huseyn_Shaheed_Suhrawardy#cite_note-banglapedia.org-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-banglapedia.org_1-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huseyn_Shaheed_Suhrawardy#cite_note-banglapedia.org-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huseyn_Shaheed_Suhrawardy#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/address>\n<p>Born into a prominent\u00a0<a title=\"Bengali Muslim\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bengali_Muslim\">Bengali Muslim<\/a>\u00a0family, Suhrawardy was educated at\u00a0<a title=\"Oxford University\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxford_University\">Oxford<\/a>, and joined the\u00a0<a title=\"Swaraj Party\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swaraj_Party\">Swaraj Party<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a title=\"Chittaranjan Das\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chittaranjan_Das\">Chittaranjan Das<\/a>\u00a0upon returning to India in 1921. He became the Mayor of\u00a0<a title=\"Calcutta\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calcutta\">Calcutta<\/a>, the largest city in British India, during the 1930s, and later, as a member of the\u00a0<a title=\"All-India Muslim League\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/All-India_Muslim_League\">All-India Muslim League<\/a>, assumed the premiership of Bengal in the mid-1940s. Along with\u00a0<a title=\"Sarat Chandra Bose\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sarat_Chandra_Bose\">Sarat Chandra Bose<\/a>, Suhrawardy mooted the\u00a0<a title=\"United Bengal\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Bengal\">United Bengal<\/a>\u00a0proposal, in an attempt to prevent the\u00a0<a title=\"Partition of Bengal (1947)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Partition_of_Bengal_(1947)\">Partition of Bengal<\/a>. Following the partition of India, he became a leading populist statesman of\u00a0<a title=\"East Pakistan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Pakistan\">East Pakistan<\/a>, leaving the\u00a0<a title=\"All-India Muslim League\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/All-India_Muslim_League\">Muslim League<\/a>\u00a0to join the newly formed centre-left\u00a0<a title=\"Awami League\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Awami_League\">Awami League<\/a>\u00a0in 1952. Along with\u00a0<a title=\"A K Fazlul Huq\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_K_Fazlul_Huq\">A K Fazlul Huq<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Maulana Bhashani\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maulana_Bhashani\">Maulana Bhashani<\/a>, he led the pan-Bengali\u00a0<a title=\"United Front (East Pakistan)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Front_(East_Pakistan)\">United Front<\/a>\u00a0alliance to a resounding victory in the 1954 East Bengal elections, which witnessed a crushing defeat of the Muslim League in East Pakistan.<sup id=\"cite_ref-banglapedia.org_1-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huseyn_Shaheed_Suhrawardy#cite_note-banglapedia.org-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-storyofpakistan.com_3-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huseyn_Shaheed_Suhrawardy#cite_note-storyofpakistan.com-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 1956, the\u00a0<a title=\"Awami League\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Awami_League\">Awami League<\/a>\u00a0formed an alliance with the\u00a0<a title=\"Republican Party (Pakistan)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republican_Party_(Pakistan)\">Republican Party<\/a>\u00a0to lead a coalition\u00a0<a title=\"Pakistan Government\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pakistan_Government\">federal government<\/a>\u00a0in Pakistan. Suhrawardy became prime minister and pledged to resolve the energy crises, address economic disparities between East and West Pakistan, and strengthen the armed forces. His initiatives included\u00a0<a title=\"Supply side economics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supply_side_economics\">supply side economic policies<\/a>, planning\u00a0<a title=\"Nuclear power in Pakistan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_power_in_Pakistan\">nuclear power and energy<\/a>\u00a0and reorganizing and reforming the Pakistani military. In foreign policy, he pioneered a strategic partnership with the\u00a0<a title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">United States<\/a>. Faced with pressure from the bureaucracy and business community over his policies in aid distribution, nationalization and opposition to the\u00a0<a title=\"One Unit\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/One_Unit\">One Unit<\/a>\u00a0scheme, he was forced to resign on October 10, 1957, under threat of dismissal by President\u00a0<a title=\"Iskandar Mirza\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iskandar_Mirza\">Iskandar Mirza<\/a>. He was banned from public life by the military junta of General\u00a0<a title=\"Ayub Khan (Field Marshal)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ayub_Khan_(Field_Marshal)\">Ayub Khan<\/a>.
